Movie Description:
Cesaria Evora is the undisputed queen of Cape Verdian blues, a melancholy music called "morna" which isa blendof Prtuguese fado, jazz andlatin. Cesaria`s singing is reminiscent of Billie Hoilday, and her life resonates with the same sense of tragedyand doom-she was married and deserted bythree different men. The gentlesadness of her singing is accentuated by melodicpiano, ukuele and guitar. In this portrait she takes us back to herhomeland and revisits the bars and cafesof Mindela, where she is used to sing inreturn for a drink or something to eat in her daily struggle to survive. In thefilm she also performs at a festival in Louisiana and a recording session in New York. Cesaria put the heart- rendering melodies of the morna on themap of world music, and the "diva with bare feet" insists on performing barefoot as a symbolic salute to povertythat was a profound force in shaping hermusic and still afflicts her fellow CapeVerdians.
