In the spring of 2002, filmmaker JoeBerlinger traveled to Vienna to witness the burial of the preserved brains of over 700 handicapped children. Thevictims had been murdered in a "euthanasia" clinic as part of the Nazi eugencies program that many concider theopeningact of the Holocaust. GRAY MATTER chronicles the directorsjourney as he searches for Dr. Heinrich Gross who not only allegedly partici- pated in these murders, but alsocontinued to experiment on the childrensremains for decades after the end of thewar, while rising to prominence in Austrian society despite his past.
