Movie Description:
Local MP and schoolmaster Thomas Gradgrind raises his children, Louisa and Tom, in theutilitarian fashion, stressing reason and fact and dismissingimagination and emotion. Under his influence, Louisa growscold while Tom turns to a secret life of drinking and gambling. To be nearer her brother,Louisa accepts an offer of marriage fromher boss, the self-made, self-important banker Josiah Bounderby, though she doesnot love him. But soon she finds herselfsuccumbing to the attentions ofthe lothario James Harthouse. All the while,Mrs. Sparsit, aformer aristocrat who now works for Bounderby, obsessivelywatches as the drama unfolds, longing for Louisa`s downfall. As Louisa faces alife without love and Tom`s fate begins to turneven darker, will Gradgrindbegin to realize the imperfections in his philosophy of rational self- interest?
