Lynley is reinstated, and he, Havers andcolleague Detective Constable Winston Nkata are trying to catch crime boss MichaelShand. Unfortunately, their starwitness, Roger Pollard, is found shot dead in the Essex marshes. When they arrive at the crime scene, Havers finds herselfon the grounds of the campthat she used to visit on family holidays-and where Pollard grew up. Why was the witness, who was supposed tobe under police protection, in an areawhere he was well known? Havers rediscovers a girl whomshe remembers from her childhood, and when she learns about the unsolved murder of a youngchild 20 years ago, Havers becomes convinced that investigating that murder will lead her to the answers she needs to catch Shand.
