In the early 1830`s Texas was about to explode. Although under Mexican officials, concerned with illegal tradingand immigration, were preparedto fight hard to keep the province undertheir control. In the area were 4,000 Mexican Texans or Tejanos, who had livedin the territory for generations. Tejan-os had been fighting for autonomy for twenty five years and their leadership had strong business and personal ties to the US sttler community. As war grewinevitable many, but not all chose to fight with the Anglo settlers. The Batt-le of the Alamoand the war for Texas independence split the Tejano communityin two. In the end, the gamble for a more prosperous future in an independentTexas proved tragic for Tejanos. Follow-ing therevolution, they were overwhelm-ed by a surge of US immigration. Throughintimidation and outright theft, vast tracts of Tejano land were transferred to US speculators.
