Sharpe has to battle with agang of deserters who have taken hostages, incl-uding Isabella,the wife of Sir Agustus Farthingdale, the English Colonel. Sharpe is send with the ransom money. All is not what it seems, for theleader of the desperados is none other than Sergeant Hakeswill, an evil villainfrom Sharpe`s past. Hakeswill tricks Sharpe and insists thatthe ransom be doubled. Sharpe leads an attack to free Isab-ella and destroy the force of desterterswho Wellington fears pose a threat to the discipline of his men.
